SPECIFICATIONS

GENERAL SPECIFICATIONS for 'RTA' Area and Highway Lighting Poles

Design:
The complete lighting standard, including brackets, shaft, pole base and transformer base shall be designed to support luminaires with Effective Projected Areas (EPA) ratings as designated for various wind speeds. The design criteria used shall be based on the 1985 edition of the' American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials', " Standard Specifications for Structural Supports for Highway Signs, Luminaires and Traffic Signals." The aluminum alloys designated herein are per the Aluminum Association Standards.

Shaft:
The shaft shall be fabricated from extruded aluminum alloy 6063 per ASTM B221, B241 or B429 and shall be fully heat treated to achieve a T6 temper after the assembly has been welded. Ground mounted and embedded poles shall have a handhole (access) located between 12" and 18" above the base. Handholes shall have an aluminum reinforcing frame to maintain the structural integrity of the pole. An electrical grounding lug shall be provided near the opening for easy wire attachment. The aluminum handhole cover shall be fastened by means of stainless steel hardware. Handhole sizes shall be 2" x 4 1/2" for poles with a 4" and 5" base diameter, 3" x 5" for 6" and 7" poles and 4" x 6" for poles 8" and larger. All poles shall have a rotary satin brush finish.
The shaft shall have sufficient strength to keep deflection of the luminaire to less than 5% of the shaft length.

Pole Base Flange:
The pole base shall be of cast aluminum alloy 356 per ASTM B26 or B108 and be of one piece construction. The base shall be heat treated to a T6 temper after welding. The base/shaft connection shall have a tight tolerance fit before welding. The shaft shall be joined to the base with two circumferential welds at the top and bottom of the base. The assembly shall be heat treated after welding to achieve maximum material r properties. Aluminum anchor bolt covers, bolt caps or base covers shall be provided for the appropriate base style.

Transformer Base (T-Base):
The transformer base assembly shall be of a one or two piece design made from permanent mold castings of 356 aluminum alloy per ASTM B108 and fully heat treated to a T6 temper. A removable aluminum or ABS plastic access door shall be fastened with an aluminum latch and stainless steel screw. A method for electrical grounding shall be provided. Galvanized steel fiatwashers of sufficient size shall be provided for proper load distribution. Connecting bolts to fasten the pole to the T-Base shall be per ASTM A307. All bolts, nuts, lockwashers and fiatwashers shall be galvanized per ASTM A153.

When required, a base, either T-Base or Pole Base style, approved by the Federal Highway Administration as a breakaway device meeting the requirements of AASHTO Specification -Section 7, will be supplied.

Anchorage:
Steel anchor bolts are manufactured to AASHTO specification M314-90, Grade 55 (55,000 psi minimum yield strength), meeting the requirements of ASTM A576. Galvanizing to be per AASHTO M234 Class C (ASTM A153).

Appurtenances:

Pole caps: Shall be made from 356F cast aluminum or 6061 alloy and fastened to the pole top with stainless steel set screws.
Tenons: Shall be 356T6 cast aluminum or 6063T6 or 6061T6, and welded to the pole top. Floodlight brackets: Shall be made from 6061T6 or 6063T6 aluminum and be joined by welding. Stainless steel bolts are provided for field assembly. Brackets have a satin etched aluminum finish.
Tapered Elliptical and Truss Style Arms: Arm members shall be tapered and formed from 6063 aluminum tubing or pipe. Following assembly welding of the components, the mounting plates (or clamps), the entire assembly shall be heat treated to T6 condition. Arms have a satin-etched aluminum finish.

Welding:
All welding shall be performed by certified welders using the inert gas-shielded arc method with a consumable electrode. Welding must comply with the American Welding Society Specification 01.2, Structural Welding Code -Aluminum. All parts shall be cleaned prior to welding by chemical or mechanical means.

Vibration:
Occasionally, because of a phenomenon caused by local peculiarities of the site and or prevailing winds, poles may be susceptible to wind induced harmonic vibrations in the 10 to 20 mph wind range. Vibrations dampers which alleviate this condition must be available from the manufacturer, either factory installed inside the pole, or for field installation on the exterior of the pole. All round, square and cruciform poles having a post-top or side-of-pole mounted luminaire, which are 25' or greater are supplied with a factory installed damper. Poles with 4' single member arms (35' and greater) and 6' single member arms (40' or greater) shall be supplied with factory installed dampers.

Poles installed on bridges and structures may be subjected to traffic-induced vibration. This can have an adverse effect on the luminaire and the lamp filament, as well as the pole assembly. In these applications, vibration pads and washers for mounting the pole are advisable in addition to the vibration damper.

Finishing:
Round poles shall receive a satin rotary brush finish. Square poles, cruciform poles, arms and brackets shall receive a chemical satin etch finish. Alternate finishes can include clear and bronze-tone anodic paint and powder coatings. A variety of colors can be utilized.
Grounding:
Poles must be grounded in accordance with the requirements of the National Electrical Code and applicable local codes. All Poles and T-8ases shall be provided with provisions for grounding.

Foundations:
Since local soil and frost conditions vary widely, a civil engineer familiar with these conditions shall be consulted regarding the size and design of the foundation system.

Packaging:
All poles shall be spirally wrapped with protective krinkle kraft paper. If outdoor storage or storage in moist areas is anticipated, the wrapping should be removed to prevent water-marking and staining. The poles shall not be allowed to rest directly on the ground. Do not cover the poles with a tarpaulin or similar cover. Additional packaging may be provided depending on the shipping method. Small parts shall be packaged in boxes.
